What is Giresun Tombul Fındığı?

Giresun Tombul Fındığı is a round hazelnut variety grown exclusively in defined districts of Giresun and Trabzon provinces on Turkey's Black Sea coast, registered as EU-PDO since 20 June 2022 under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/939. The name translates as Giresun Round Hazelnut. It belongs to the Corylus avellana L. species and is marketed unshelled, shelled raw, and shelled roasted.

The variety's defining physical characteristics are documented in the EU product specification. The shell is round, bright, and brown with flattened cheeks. The kernel is round and non-fibrous with a light, bright seed skin that does not penetrate the kernel. Maximum kernel count per kilogram is 700 for shelled raw and 500 to 700 for unshelled. Shell thickness runs between 0.70 and 1.25 mm. Kernel ratio ranges from 47.5 to 55 percent.

The chemical profile sets Giresun Tombul apart from other Turkish hazelnuts. Total fat content ranges from 56 to 68 percent. Oleic acid content runs from 77 to 85 percent (g/100 g oil), which is high even by hazelnut standards. Vitamin E content ranges from 28 to 45 mg per 100 g oil. These ranges are defined in the EU Single Document published in the Official Journal of the European Union C 69/15 on 10 February 2022. They are not marketing claims. They are legally binding quality parameters tied to the registered designation.

The production area is defined precisely. In Giresun province: Piraziz, Bulancak, Dereli, Keşap, Espiye, Yağlıdere, Tirebolu, Güce, Doğankent, Görele, Çanakçı, Eynesil, and Giresun. In Trabzon province: Beşikdüzü and Vakfıkebir only. All villages in these districts are included. Hazelnuts grown outside this boundary cannot carry the Giresun Tombul Fındığı designation.

What is Levant Hazelnut?

Levant hazelnut is the established trade term for Turkish hazelnuts grown outside the Giresun Tombul Fındığı production zone. The distinction is official. Turkey's hazelnut trade formally divides production into two categories: Giresun Quality (Premium) and Levant Quality (Secondary). This classification is documented in the EU Single Document for Giresun Tombul Fındığı.

Levant hazelnuts are grown across a wider coastal and inland area of Turkey, including the broader Black Sea region provinces not covered by the PDO zone. They are not a single variety. The term encompasses multiple cultivars and production conditions. The kernel ratio, fat content, shell thickness, and flavour profile vary more widely than in PDO-zone production.

In commercial practice, Levant hazelnuts are purchased from farmers at a lower price than Giresun Quality. This differential is not determined by subjective preference. It reflects documented differences in kernel ratio, fat content, and testa peelability that affect processing yield and finished product quality for industrial users.

Levant hazelnuts carry no EU geographical indication protection. They are traded as a commodity without the legal guarantee of origin or specification compliance that the PDO designation provides.

Certification and Origin Protection

Giresun Tombul Fındığı received EU-PDO status on 20 June 2022. The registration number is PDO-TR-2419. The legal instrument is Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/939, published in EU Official Journal L 164. The applicant was FİSKOBİRLİK, the Hazelnut Agricultural Sales Cooperatives and Associations.

EU-PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) is the highest category of EU geographical indication. It requires that production, processing, and preparation all occur within the defined geographical area. For Giresun Tombul Fındığı, every stage from sapling planting through fertilisation, pruning, harvesting, husking, drying, shelling, sorting, and calibration must take place within the defined districts of Giresun and Trabzon provinces.

For an importer, EU-PDO certification means three things. First, the name Giresun Tombul Fındığı on a product is legally protected across EU member states. Second, the product must meet the chemical and physical parameters defined in the specification. Third, compliance is monitored by the Hazelnut Research Institute and the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry of Giresun and Trabzon, not by the exporter alone.

Levant hazelnuts carry no equivalent protection. A buyer purchasing Levant hazelnuts has no legal guarantee of origin, variety, or specification compliance. Quality depends entirely on the supplier's own standards and any contractual specifications the buyer negotiates.

Quality and Specification Differences

The differences between Giresun Tombul Fındığı and Levant hazelnuts are measurable, not anecdotal.

Fat content. Giresun Tombul Fındığı specification requires total fat between 56 and 68 percent for both unshelled and shelled raw product. High fat content affects flavour intensity, texture in confectionery applications, and oil extraction yield. Levant hazelnuts have no comparable mandatory fat floor.

Oleic acid. The minimum oleic acid range of 77 to 85 percent (g/100 g oil) is a chemically verifiable parameter for Giresun Tombul Fındığı. Oleic acid stability affects shelf life and processing performance. This range reflects the specific climate conditions of the Giresun and Trabzon coastal zone, documented in the product specification.

Kernel ratio. The Giresun Tombul Fındığı specification sets kernel ratio at 47.5 to 55 percent of the unshelled weight. This is commercially significant for shelling operations. Higher kernel ratio means more product yield per tonne of input.

Testa peelability. For shelled roasted product, testa peelability must reach 90 to 100 percent. This matters for chocolate, confectionery, and pastry applications where the testa affects colour, bitterness, and texture.

Physical grade. Three size grades are defined. Large: 16 to 18 mm latitude diameter (unshelled), 13 to 15 mm shelled. Medium: 14 to 16 mm unshelled, 11 to 13 mm shelled. Small: 12 to 14 mm unshelled, 9 to 11 mm shelled. Maximum moisture for unshelled is 7 percent; for shelled raw, 6 percent; for shelled roasted, 3 percent.

These parameters apply to every consignment of Giresun Tombul Fındığı sold under the designation. There is no equivalent mandatory specification for Levant hazelnuts.

Why Origin Matters for Bulk Buyers

Turkey is the world's dominant hazelnut exporter. The global import market for shelled hazelnuts (HS 0802.22) was valued at approximately USD 1.1 billion, with Italy, Germany, and France as the three largest import markets, followed by Switzerland, Algeria, Poland, and Spain.

The origin distinction has direct commercial consequences for buyers sourcing at volume.

Import documentation. EU-PDO certified products imported into the EU carry the right to use the EU PDO logo on packaging. This is a labelling asset for retailers and branded manufacturers. Products claiming the Giresun Tombul Fındığı designation must comply with the specification and can be challenged under EU geographical indication law if they do not.

HS classification. Shelled hazelnuts import under HS 0802.22. This code applies regardless of PDO status. The PDO designation does not change the tariff classification. What it changes is the documentation a buyer can request to verify origin and compliance.

Specification compliance. Industrial buyers — chocolate manufacturers, confectionery producers, pastry suppliers — typically purchase against written specifications for fat content, moisture, kernel ratio, and size grade. Giresun Tombul Fındığı's mandatory specification parameters align closely with the quality floors most industrial buyers write into their contracts. This reduces the specification negotiation burden and the rejection risk at goods-in.

Price premium. Giresun Quality hazelnuts are purchased from Turkish farmers at a documented price premium over Levant Quality. That premium flows through the supply chain. Buyers of Giresun Tombul Fındığı pay more per tonne. The premium reflects the combination of origin restriction, variety control, mandatory specification compliance, and independent monitoring.
